On 21 October 2025, the European Commission announced the launch of COMPASS-AI a “new initiative that includes the establishment of a community of experts to advance the safe and effective use of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare”.
This initiative will increase the use of AI in healthcare and “will also launch an interactive digital platform to map best practices and facilitate knowledge exchange. The network will deliver AI deployment guidelines and work to raise AI literacy of healthcare professionals, hospital managers and patients”.
COMPASS-AI is part of the Commission’s recent Apply AI Strategy, designed to “boost AI adoption and innovation across Europe, particularly among Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs)”.
According to the European Commission the AI Act, “together with the Medical Devices Regulations, creates a clear framework for the safe deployment of AI in healthcare. It fosters innovation while ensuring that AI solutions entering the European single market are safe and trustworthy. By providing legal certainty to market players and harmonizing rules across Member States, the AI Act strengthens trust among end users like patients and healthcare professionals”.
